International Sunday School Lesson

Acts 2:1-17

“All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other languages, as the Spirit gave them ability” (Acts 2:4—NRSV).

“And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance”
 (Acts 2:4—KJV).

Jesus began His ministry by first calling twelve disciples to follow Him and become leaders in His kingdom. Following His death and resurrection, by the Day of Pentecost, His followers numbered at least one hundred twenty persons (Acts 1:15). On the Day of Pentecost, after the Holy Spirit filled all those who believed, three thousand people were added to the Church in one day (Acts 2:41). The work Jesus began has continued through millions of believers as they have obeyed Him and witnessed “in Jerusalem, in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth” (Acts 1:8).

God does not compel people to believe in Him and the gospel of His Son; however, God does give people good and sufficient reasons for becoming believers. When the followers of Jesus began speaking in foreign languages on the Day of Pentecost so people from around the world could hear the gospel in their own language, some sneered and accused them of being “filled with new wine,” instead of being filled with the Holy Spirit (Acts 2:13). Rather than forcing someone to receive the Holy Spirit and believe, God inspired Peter to reason with those who mocked the believers.

First, Peter appealed to their ability to reason, saying with common sense, “it is only nine o’clock in the morning;” therefore, no one is drunk (Acts 2:15). Second, Peter appealed to their knowledge of the Bible, and quoted the prophet Joel, “In the last days it will be, God declares, that I will pour out my Spirit upon all flesh, and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy” (Acts 2:17).

Think about your answers to the questions below before your Sunday school class meets, discuss in class, or use for further study. In some cases, I do not always write the questions to have a definitive right or wrong answer. In most cases, the questions should encourage everyone to think about how to apply biblical truths to their daily lives. Before beginning to answer the questions below, read the entire Scripture lesson in your favorite translation or compare translations. Write your thoughts in the space provided and take them to your Sunday school class for discussion.

1. What ideas or experiences helped you come to believe in the gospel of Jesus Christ?

2. Which ones of these ideas and experiences do you think you could share with an unbeliever that would help them come to believe the gospel?

3. Why is the Holy Spirit so important to believers? Why is the Holy Spirit so important in helping people share the gospel with others?

4. What difference did the Holy Spirit make in Jesus’ ministry? What difference did He make in the disciples who witnessed for Jesus after the Day of Pentecost?

5. What are some good reasons from the Bible that you can share with someone to help them come to saving faith, return to saving faith, or maintain saving faith?
