Galatians 2:11-21

“It is no longer I who live, but it is Christ who lives in me. And the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me" (Galatians 2:20—NRSV).

“And it is no longer I who live, but it is Christ who lives in me. And the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me”
 (Galatians 2:20—KJV).

Prior to meeting Jesus Christ, the Apostle Paul focused on how well he and others obeyed all the religious laws and traditions of his people. He spent much of his time enforcing these laws and persecuting those who disobeyed them. After he met Jesus Christ and became His follower, Paul changed the focus of his attention from his achievements to God. Looking to Jesus, Paul described his change of mind with the words, “It is no longer I who live.”

As the Spirit of God once indwelt the holy temple in Jerusalem, so Paul allowed Jesus Christ to indwell him. Jesus Christ within him became the divine center, focus, guide, and power of all Paul did. Paul knew this could be the experience of every Christian: “Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, which you have from God, and that you are not your own?” (1 Corinthians 6:19).

We live in earthly human bodies subject to disease and death, but we can choose daily to “live by faith in the Son of God” and with the hope that “does not disappoint us, because God's love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit that has been given to us” (Romans 5:5). Afflictions and persecutions might influence us to think otherwise, but we know Jesus Christ loves us because He gave himself for us. Furthermore, we anticipate the future when He will make “all things new” (Revelation 21:5).

Think about your answers to the questions below before your Sunday school class meets, discuss in class, or use for further study. In some cases, I do not always write the questions to have a definitive right or wrong answer. In most cases, the questions should encourage everyone to think about how to apply biblical truths to their daily lives. Before beginning to answer the questions below, read the entire Scripture lesson in your favorite translation or compare translations. Write your thoughts in the space provided and take them to your Sunday school class for discussion.

1. What is the difference between thinking “it is no longer I who live” and “I have no value as an individual human being”?

2. What life choices or decisions do you make differently when you remind yourself that Christ lives in you? How does knowing that Christ lives in you have an effect on your behavior?

3. What is the focus of your attention “as a whole” or as the basis for your daily decisions? How does your living by faith in the Son of God have an effect on the focus of your attention?

4. If you are “not your own,” whose are you? What does that knowledge mean to you and what effect does that knowledge have on the way you live?

5. In what ways does God demonstrate His love? In what ways do you demonstrate the love of God?
