Luke 1:31

“And now, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you will name him Jesus” (Luke 1:31—NRSV).

“And, behold, thou shalt conceive in thy womb, and bring forth a son, and shalt call his name JESUS” (
Luke 1:31—KJV).

God sent the angel Gabriel to prepare Mary for the birth of Jesus because she had “found favor with God” (Luke 1:30). God chose the best woman possible to be the mother of His Son. God knew from her developed character that Mary would teach Jesus to love His heavenly Father and live according to the Law of God. God gives everyone what is best, and God chose the best person to perform the most important job ever given to a woman—raising and training the long expected Messiah, God’s only begotten Son, to become the Savior of the world (see John 3:16).

Unlike Zechariah in the temple, when Gabriel appeared to him and foretold the birth of John the Baptist, Mary did not doubt the angel’s words or God’s plan for her life. However, she did wonder about how she was supposed to conceive God’s Son, saying to Gabriel, “I am a virgin” (Luke 1:34). Naturally, she would have wondered if she was supposed to speed up her marriage to Joseph or choose someone else to marry who would father her son. Gabriel explained, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you; therefore the child to be born will be holy; he will be called Son of God” (Luke 1:35).

God expected Mary to wait for His timing and His ways to conceive and deliver her Son, Jesus. Rather than ask for a sign, Mary humbly accepted God’s will and replied to Gabriel, “Here am I, the servant of the Lord; let it be with me according to your word” (Luke 1:38). © Copyright 2007 by L.G.           Think about your answers to the questions below before your Sunday school class meets, discuss in class, or use for further study. In some cases, I do not always write the questions to have a definitive right or wrong answer. In most cases, the questions should encourage everyone to think about how to apply biblical truths to their daily lives. Before beginning to answer the questions below, read the entire Scripture lesson in your favorite translation or compare translations. Write your thoughts in the space provided and take them to your Sunday school class for discussion.

1. In what ways would it help both Elizabeth and Mary for the angel Gabriel to wait six months before telling Mary the good news that she would give birth to the Messiah? Where did Mary go after the angel spoke to her?

2. Why do you think the Bible clearly teaches that Mary was a virgin? Even recording what Mary told the angel, “I am a virgin.”?

3. Name some of the character traits or attributes and attitudes of Mary that you admire from this Bible passage (and other things you remember about Mary)? Do you think it is easier or harder for young girls today to have the character of Mary? Why or why not?

4. As you study the Gospel According to Luke, watch for all the ways Luke teaches about the Holy Spirit. What does Luke teach about the Holy Spirit in this scripture selection?

5. What are some changes that you or other Christians or your congregation might need to make to develop daily the commitment of Mary expressed in Luke 1:38?
